Windsor CC 1st vs High Wycome 2nds.

On an overcast day at the High Wycombe ground on Saturday, Windsor 1st XI were chasing a 3rd win in 5 when taking on 1st division new boys High Wycombe 2nds. Windsor vice skipper Thompson had led the side to an impressive 38 points in 2 games in the absence of regular skipper Watkins, who returned to lead the side after a couple of weeks out. Watkins promptly lost the toss and Windsor were inserted to face the new ball barrage from Robinson and Parveen. Robinson’s pace soon had the Windsor top order dancing around at the crease as late swing and tennis ball bounce made runs a rare commodity in the first 10 overs. Davies was first to go, failing to connect with an over ambitious drive to a good length ball. Bird followed soon after carving a full toss straight to cover and the home side began to sense a collapse.

Young Michael Gould then calmed a few nerves with some aggressive driving of anything overpitched, but he too was undone by the pace of Robinson. Smith never settled against a barrage of short stuff and was soon hobbling off to the changing room after damaging ligaments in his ankle trying to evade a particularly nasty lifter from Robinson. Windsor were rocking, and as Mathews played round one, the score limped to 65 for 4.

Enter overseas tyro Justin ‘Danger’ Granger and the gritty Pete Thompson. Thompson dropped anchor, stone walling the Wycombe attack whilst Granger began to unleash a range of beautifully timed drives and cuts. Runs were suddenly flowing freely, and Wycombe skipper Bird shuffled his attack in an attempt to break the partnership. It made little difference as Granger moved effortlessly through the gears, scoring at over a run a ball in a scintillating hours cricket that left the Wycombe team in disarray. Granger finally fell to the retuning Parveen after plundering 82 off only 64 balls. As the Wycombe team breathed a sigh of relief, Skipper Watkins joined the Border-esque Thompson at the crease. The barrage then continued as Watkins unleashed a flurry of 6’s and 4’s taking the Windsor total up to an impressive 251 for 8 after 51 overs. Watkins declared knowing that the impressive Windsor middle order had blasted his team well into the box seat.

In reply, Robinson and Bird started briskly for the home team, racing to 60 off the first 10 overs, helped by some wayward bowling from Granger and Griffiths. Windsor didn’t threaten a wicket and only when Watkins brought Mohindru into the attack were Windsor able to make the necessary breakthrough, Thompson taking a smart catch in the infield. Watkins then lured Bird into a false shot, before Hubbick was brilliantly run out by danger man Granger.

Windsor then turned the screw. With 30 years of cricketing experience to call upon, Mohindru offered nothing for the Wycombe middle order to feast upon, and as the pressure built the wily seamer picked up the crucial middle order of Winter and R Watkins. Granger returned to make amends for his earlier lack of control and with a burst of genuine pace he picked up 3 late order wickets. Wycombe were out of the game and whilst they bravely tried to hit our towards the end, there was only going to be one winner of this contest. Windsor wrapped things up as Watkins returned to mop up the final wicket and continue the premier Berkshire clubs impressive charge up the table.

North Maidenhead await on Saturday, with the winners guaranteed the top spot in the league as the excitement builds in Division 1.
