Declaration proves profitable for Windsor

Windsor 227-5 Dec (50 Overs)
(Tom Bullock 66*, Brian Davis 47, Dave Richies 33)

Marlow Park 164
(Chris Edge 21-5)

Windsor entertained Marlow Park on a blustery afternoon with both sides in good form at the start of the season although Windsor captain Chris Edge against the odds made it 5 losses out of 5 at the toss as Marlow asked Windsor to bat first.

Against a young bowling attack Windsor were initially up against it as Rob Noble departed for a duck but Nigel Wing and Brian Davis steadied the ship and as regulations meant that after 10 overs their colts were forced reluctantly to take a break the score began to move along as both began to get their eyes in against the second string attack. Wing was unfortunate to play one straight back to Unsworth as it climbed on him from a length but this brought young prospect Dave Ritchies to the crease and playing beyond his years he and Brian Davis began to work the field pushing the run rate up against a tiring attack. The dismissal of Davis 3 runs shy of a deserved half century only brought the silent assassin Tom Bullock to the crease and like stealing candy from a baby Marlows ambitions of trying to keep Windsor under 200 was suddenly out of their reach as ably support by Richies and Rob Dawson Windsor were able to declare their innings on 227-5 after 50 overs with Bullock undefeated on a superb 66.

Windsor opened with regular seamers Chris Edge and Alex Hill as both took early wickets with the help of Wicket Keeper Brian Davis taking 2 sharp chances. With Windsor’s tails up Marlow opener Harris was clearly unable to take the pressure and an unsavoury incident with young Windsor fielder Stephen Eggunhuizen threatened to blot the game but tempers were luckily contained although the next over this clearly worked in Windsor’s favour as racing in with his back up Edge produced a ball that was clearly too good for Coll and Marlows star batsman was back in the pavilion for just 2 runs. This now turned into Windsor’s game to win when Unsworth became another victim for Edge who also took a sharp chance at backward point from Eggunhuizen to remove Cassidy. The problem now for Windsor was keeping Marlow interested in the run chase. The carrot was dangled in the form of Amit Subarker and Rob Noble and as Subarker tied up one end Rob Nobles mixed bag of long hops, full tosses and the occasional jaffa saw him unlucky not to pick up a wicket or two but taking on the run chase a double breakthrough by Subarker aided by the experienced Andy Wigley saw Harris depart after making 50 and the experienced Trott and Buxton lose their wickets in the chase. The game was now up as far as Marlow were concerned and with 6 overs to go were happy to play out for the draw as the experienced captain Ashton attempted to shield the bowling from the tail against the recalled Edge and Hill. With 4 overs to go Edge saw a chance off Cassidy fall just short of gully Rob Dawson but a slower fifth ball saw him fall to the same shot but this time Dawson managed to hold on. With the final ball of the over Edge yorked former Windsor player Holland first ball and with 3 overs to go Marlow were 9 down. It was imperative that Ashton was kept off strike to expose the tail and good bowling by Alex Hill meant Edge had a full over at the number 11. His hatrick ball was was too short as it pinged past Marlows Number 11’s shoulder although the next was just about perfect as his middle stump was rattled and Windsor had wrapped up a thoroughly deserved victory.

Windsor now go top of 4B although they won’t be expecting any favours against next weeks opponents, neighbours Datchet who unexpectedly currently sit bottom of the league. Play begins at Datchet at 1.30pm.
