Young Windsor side start season with a win

An inexperienced Windsor 2nd XI travelled to Surrey Championship side Egham on Saturday and returned as comprehensive winners. The sunny conditions on the day could not disguise the damp green track, and knowing that runs would be hard to come by early on, Windsor won the toss and elected to bowl.

Opening with the up and coming seamer Nick Cornish and captain Chris Edge both bowled immaculate lines and lengths and restricted Egham to just 23 runs from the first ten overs of the 45 over game. The change in bowling saw the experienced Richard Endacott backed up by some superb out fielding strangle Egham even further as their innings struggled to gain any momentum. Once the initial breakthrough came from Jay Banergee in 28th over Egham had been restricted to just 67 runs. Opener Ward then began to play some shots but the reintroduction of Edge and Cornish towards the end saw Egham limp to 157-5 from their allotted overs.

Windsor responded with Richard Noble and Nigel Wing opening the batting and after a steady start, both began to dominate the Egham attack and rarely looked threatened. However, shortly after Wing passed his half century he was bowled by Aplin and Noble was caught at fine leg from Catchpole. However, with overs on their side Windsor consolidated and in the end it was left to the normal 3rd XI pair of Rick Baumgartner and Andy Wigley to steer Windsor to and extremely comfortable 7 wicket win.

Windsor now hope to build upon this success next week away at Chalfont St Peter where debuts will be given to newcomers leg spinner Mike Dean and batsman Andrew Clarke as the side look forward to challenging for honours in Division 4b this season.
