Windsor Slump against the odds

Despite being the Bookies favourite, Windsor fell at the last to an inspired Royal Ascot side at the Home Park on Sunday.

On winning the toss Windsor entered the paddock full of confidence. However, Chorley pulled up in the first furlong, and despite a brief flurry of strokes Gould soon followed. This started a batting collapse which left Windsor not even at the races struggling to 98 – 8. A combination of poor strokes and good bowling by the Ascot attack left Windsor reeling. It was down to the less fancied horses to retrieve the situation. A partnership of 43 by O’Shannesey (35) and the inspired Endacott (32) saw Windsor through to 161-9 off their 40 overs. Sweetman been the pick of the Ascot bowlers finishing with impressive figures of 5 –23.

The final furlongs saw Ascot get off to a solid start before Edge removed Partridge for 26. However, this only brought to the race Tindale who continued the good work. The Windsor bowlers struggled to take wickets as rain started to fall, leaving the ground good to soft. Mark Huggins removed Baker and Edge accounted for Harding shortly after as Windsor looked to pull themselves back into contention. Wickets continued to fall in the final 10 overs to set up a tense finish with Gould and O’Shannesey leading the charge grabbing two wickets a piece. However, the Windsor total proved not to be enough as Ascot romped home by a length and a half, winning with 5 balls to spare.
